If you don't hear yourself, you can't sing with your own voice. The higher the volume, the lesser you hear yourself. You try, shouting with that voice which is neither yours nor other's. If you put the volume down, the lesser you need to shout, the more you need to look for yourself. Working out your posture, breathing and your sensations should help you obtain the voice that matches your body. When there's no more background music, your version sounds different. Recognizing yourself takes an effort.
